LIC Ordered To Pay Rs 50 Lakh For Covid Policy Premium Payer's Family

A district-level consumer disputes commission in Kerala has ordered Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), India's largest insurer, to pay Rs 50 lakh in compensation to the family of a policy premium payer who succumbed to COVID-19, citing the insurer's technical lapse. The commission fined LIC Rs 50 lakh for violating its own guidelines, which require policy issuance within 15 days of receiving premium payment. In this case, LIC received over Rs 20 lakh as premium, but refunded it only after nine months. The Kottayam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission further observed that LIC failed to inform the applicant about the temporary suspension of life insurance policies for non-resident Indians during the COVID-19 pandemic, prior to his demise. This omission denied him the chance to secure alternative coverage, constituting a grave service lapse, it said. According to an official release here, Jemon, a London-based expatriate, had purchased a Jeevan Umang life insurance

"Drama": Finance Minister Rubbishes Objections To Tax On Insurance Premium

Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, targetted by her critics over the  18 per cent Goods and Services Tax or GST on life and medical insurance premiums, retorted today that leaders having objection should first have consulted their state finance ministers who have a say in the GST Council. Amid growing dissidence over the GST on premiums, the government has repeatedly clarified that it was a decision of the GST Council -- which has only brought more jibes from the Opposition. Tax has been there on medical insurance even before GST was introduced, Ms Sitharaman said in the Lok Sabha today. "There was already a Service Tax on medical insurance, before the GST was introduced. This is not a new tax, it was already there in all the states," she said. "Those protesting here, did they discuss regarding the removal of this tax in their states? Did they write to the Finance Ministers of their respective states about it and asked them to raise it in the GST Council where

BJP Slams Congress's Salman Khurshid Over "Anarchist" Bangladesh Remarks

The BJP on Wednesday slammed as "anarchist" Congress leader Salman Khurshid's remarks that a Bangladesh-like situation could happen in India as well. At a book release function on Tuesday night, Mr Khurshid said that though "everything may look normal on the surface", what is happening in Bangladesh could happen in India. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who was also present at the event, said on Wednesday that he could not explain what Mr Khurshid meant but the larger message that Bangladesh has given is about the importance of democracy and free and fair elections. BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy castigated Mr Khurshid and termed his remarks "anarchist". "He is also a member of the CWC, this is an anarchist statement, and I think it is a kind of sedition. It's unfortunate that the Congress is resorting to such anarchist statements to hide its failure," Mr Rudy said. Reacting to Mr Khurshid's remarks, BJP MP Sambit Patra claimed that Mr

IIT Indore Designs Shoes That Generate Electricity With Each Step

Image
In a significant technological breakthrough, the Indian Institute of Technology, Indore, (IIT Indore) has delivered ten pairs of Tribo-Electric Nanogenerator (TENG) based shoe sole energy harvesting units to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These shoes, are designed to harness energy from human motion, providing a sustainable power source for electronic devices. These shoes utilize advanced tribo-pairs, specifically Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) and Aluminium, to generate power with each step. This energy is then stored in a central device within the shoe sole, ensuring a reliable power source for small-scale electronic circuits. Additionally, the shoes are equipped with sophisticated tracking technology, including RFID and a satellite-based GPS module for live location tracking. Professor Suhas Joshi, Director of IIT Indore, emphasising the military applications of this technology, said, "The real-time location tracking capabilities enhance the s

Case Against Teacher Who Slapped Child For Failing To Recite 'ABCD' Quashed

The Delhi High Court has quashed an FIR against a teacher for allegedly slapping a three-year-old child nine years ago for failing to recite A, B, C, D. The court passed the order noting that the teacher and the child's family intend to put a quietus to the proceedings arising out of a minor issue and pending for nine years, and that the settlement shall promote harmony between the parties and allow them to move forward in life. "Also, the chances of conviction are bleak in view of an amicable settlement between the parties. Further, no past involvement of the petitioner (teacher) has been brought to the notice of this court," Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta said, adding that continuing with the proceedings would be nothing but an abuse of the process of the court. An FIR was registered in 2015 on a complaint from the child's mother, alleging that when her son returned from school, he had injury marks on his face. The child informed his mother that as he was unable
