"Bill On Civil Code Should Be Passed In Parliament": Team Eknath Shinde

The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena on Tuesday demanded that a bill on the Uniform Civil Code be passed in the coming budget session of Parliament. Speaking at a news conference in Delhi after an all-party meet on the eve of the session, Sena MP Rahul Shewale also demanded that Parliament pass a resolution congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Top Court Orders Courts To Shun Practice Of Mentioning Litigants' Caste

The Supreme Court has ordered its Registry, all High Courts, and subordinate courts to stop the practice of mentioning the caste or religion of litigants in case papers. A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah, in its recent order, said that the practice should be shunned and stopped immediately. It directed all High Courts to ensure that the caste or religion of a litigant does not appear in the memo of parties in any petition filed before High Courts or subordinate courts under their jurisdiction. "We see no reason for mentioning the caste/religion of any litigant either before this Court or the courts below. Such a practice is to be shunned and must be ceased forthwith. It is therefore deemed appropriate to pass a general order directing that henceforth the caste or religion of parties shall not be mentioned in the memo of parties of a petition/proceeding filed before this Court, irrespective of whether any such details have been furnished before the courts b

Delhi Records Maximum Temperature Of 18.6 Degrees Celsius On Sunday

The national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 18.6 degrees Celsius, normal for the season's average. The minimum temperature of 6.0 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average, was recorded in the morning. According to the IMD, from January 31 to February 1, the weather conditions will be generally cloudy with light rain or drizzle. From January 28 to 30, the city may witness moderate fog. The humidity level of 83 per cent was recorded at 5.30 pm. The air quality index (AQI) remained at 384 in the "very poor" category at 6 pm, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). 2024 Polls: 96 Crore Citizens, Including 47 Crore Women Eligible to Vote

Over 96 crore people, including 47 crore women, are eligible to cast votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, for which more than 12 lakh polling booths will be set up across India. Over 1.73 crore of those eligible to vote are in the age group of 18 to 19 years, according to Election Commission data. As many as 1.5 crore polling personnel will be deployed to ensure smooth conduct of the parliamentary elections to elect members of the 18th Lok Sabha. According to a 2023 letter sent by the EC to political parties, India had 17.32 crore registered voters in 1951, which rose to 19.37 crore in 1957. There were 91.20 crore voters in the 2019 polls. Out of the total voters registered in the electoral rolls, nearly 18 lakh are persons with disabilities. In the first Lok Sabha elections, the voter turnout was recorded at 45 per cent. Anti Terror Agency Files Fresh Chargesheet Against 2 In Coimbatore Car Blast

The NIA on Wednesday filed a fresh charge sheet and named two more accused in the ISIS-inspired Coimbatore car bomb blast case of 2022, an agency spokesperson said. Mohammed Azarudeen alias Azar and Mohammed Idris, both residents of Coimbatore, have been named in the supplementary charge sheet and have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and Explosive Substances Act, the spokesperson said. The Delhi High Court on Monday set aside an order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) that directed the disclosure of information about the PM CARES Fund to an RTI applicant. The high court said the information sought by the RTI applicant has been sought from the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of Income Tax Department and not from the PM CARES Fund and the department does not treat PM CARES Fund as an authority. "Since the information sought for by the respondent (RTI applicant) relates to a third party, PM CARES Fund ought to have been heard. Section 11 of the RTI Act prescribes that any information related to a third party can only be divulged after giving notice to the said third party. Deposit 150 Crores By Jan 31, Supreme Court To New Owners Of Jet Airways

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Jalan-Kalrock consortium, the new owners of the cash-strapped Jet Airways, to deposit Rs 150 crore in SBI's escrow account by January 31, saying failure to do so will mean that the consortium is not in compliance with the terms of the resolution plan for reviving the airline. The top court, meanwhile, also refused to allow the separate plea of the Jet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Welfare Association seeking payment of provident fund and gratuity dues, observing if additional money is awarded, the resolution plan will become “unworkable”. The consortium, as per the lawyers for the workmen, has to pay over Rs 200 crore towards dues on account of PF and gratuity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the main "yajman" at the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22, Laxmikant Dixit, the main priest for the ritual, said in Varanasi on Wednesday. Mr Dixit refuted reports that Ram temple trust member Anil Mishra, who is performing rituals with his wife in the run-up to the main event, will be the yajman also on the consecration day. The Election Commission (EC) on Monday rescheduled a bypoll to fill a vacancy in the Uttar Pradesh legislative council as the last date to withdraw candidature was January 22, which the state government has declared a public holiday to mark the Ram temple consecration ceremony at Ayodhya. In a statement, the poll panel said January 22 was the last day to withdraw candidature for the January 29 bypoll. But in view of the public holiday, the last date to withdraw nominations has now been fixed at January 23 and the bypoll itself will take place on January 30, instead of January 29. On January 4, the EC announced two legislative council by-polls for Telangana and one for Uttar Pradesh. A doctor and two nurses of MDM Hospital in Rajasthan's Jodhpur were removed from duty today, a day after a cancer patient died due to a disruption in the supply of oxygen caused by a power shutdown in the trauma centre of the state-run facility. The action was taken following a preliminary report by the inquiry committee constituted by the hospital administration to fix responsibility for the incident. Dr Kuldeep Singh and two nurses have been put on APO (awaiting posting order), hospital superintendent Vikas Rajpurohit said, adding that a detailed inquiry was in progress. The Indian Constitution does not allow a foreign national to claim the right to reside and settle in India, the Delhi High Court has said while observing that the fundamental right of foreigners is limited to the right to life and liberty. The apex child rights body NCPCR on Wednesday summoned an official of YouTube next week over purportedly portrayal of potentially indecent acts involving mothers and sons on its platform. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has in a notice to the head of government and public policy of YouTube asked him to physically appear on 15 January 15 along with the list of all such channels running on YouTube and the list of channels on YouTube running such content. The child rights body said it is an alarming trend on YouTube channels where the channels are portraying potentially indecent acts involving mothers and sons. "This raises serious concerns about the potential harm it could inflict on the child's well-being and safety. Aligarh Muslim University cannot be a minority institution given its "national character", the Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court, which began hearing the hugely disputed question of the minority status of AMU. It said AMU is not and cannot be a university of any particular religion or religious denomination as any university which has been declared an institution of national importance cannot be a minority institution. In his written submissions filed before the apex court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the university has always been an institution of national importance, even in the pre-independence era.
