He reiterated that those who carried the Guru Granth Sahib to a police station in Ajnala in Amritsar as a shield cannot be called the 'waris' (heir) of Punjab. Kerala Temple Introduces Mechanical Elephant For Performing Rituals

In a first in Kerala, a life-like mechanical elephant was on Sunday dedicated to the deity in a temple near here for performing daily rituals from now on, instead of a real pachyderm. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India joined hands with award-winning actor Parvathy Thiruvothu, and held the 'Nadayiruthal' ceremony of 'Irinjadappilly Raman', a robotic elephant, at Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple in the district. PETA said Raman will help conduct ceremonies at the temple in a safe and cruelty-free manner and thereby supports real elephants' rehabilitation and lives in forests and end the horror of captivity for them. "An inaugural ceremony held today was followed by a performance by the percussion ensemble led by Peruvanam Satheesan Marar. Subjecting live elephants to the extreme loudness of the timpani is cruel, as it is damaging and distressing for live elephants," PETA said in a release. Ms Thiruvothu said these days we have ac

Arvind Kejriwal's First Big Challenge After Manish Sisodia's Arrest

The Arvind Kejriwal government is staring at a possible crisis with the CBI arresting Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who holds as many as 18 of the total 33 departments, including education, finance and home. The arrest of Mr Sisodia comes after that of Satyendar Jain, Delhi's then health minister, in June last year. Both have led what the Aam Aadmi Party describes as the successful transformation of Delhi's education and health services, contributing to the party's popularity and continued electoral success. Their absence leaves Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with no heavyweight lieutenant to implement his governance agenda in Delhi. The immediate challenge for Mr Kejriwal is to present the Delhi government budget as scheduled and find Mr Sisodia's replacement. Sources in the Aam Aadmi Party said Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot may present the Delhi government budget for the next financial year. "As there was a possibility that the deputy chief minister

Mr Sisodia has said he will "fully cooperate" with the central agency. The BJP's Delhi unit, however, called Mr Sisodia's request an "excuse". "Budget was an excuse. The objective was to run," Delhi BJP spokesperson Harish Khurana had said in a statement. Mr Sisodia and others face corruption allegations in bringing a new liquor sale policy in the national capital. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had ordered the CBI probe last year. At G20, Language Used To Describe Russia-Ukraine War Splits Leaders

Finance heads of the world's most powerful economies were split over language on Russia's war in Ukraine with some western powers hardening their position on isolating Moscow while host India looked for more neutral terms to describe the conflict. The two-day meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors got underway here on Friday with an agenda including a wide range of issues - from debt relief to poorer countries, to digital currencies and payments, reforms of multilateral lending institutions like the World Bank, climate change and financial inclusion. But what split the grouping was the language to be used in the end-of-the-meeting communique to describe the situation in Ukraine. Coinciding with the one year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, officials of US and France blamed Moscow for the war. While US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Russia ending the war was "the most important thing" for the global economy, French finance

Court Flags UP Police Operations In Delhi Without Local Cops' Knowledge

The Delhi High Court on Thursday expressed its displeasure over the operations of police of other States in the national capital without informing the local police. The High Court said it is necessary to obviate the repeated incidents where police from other states come to Delhi and conduct their operations here without informing the Delhi police. The High court was hearing a plea of a newly wedded couple who sought protection from the family of the girl. The couple was taken away from Delhi to Modi Nagar by the UP police. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani also perused the CCTV footage in and around the premises where the couple has been residing in Delhi to ascertain the identity of UP cops who conducted the operation. Netflix Slashes Prices In Some Countries To Boost Subscriptions

Netflix Inc said on Thursday it had reduced the prices of its subscription plans in some countries, as the streaming giant looks to retain subscriber growth amid stiff competition from rivals. With the pandemic-fueled boom cooling and consumers turning more cautious about spending, competition in the streaming businesses has heightened, pushing the companies to rethink their strategies. According to the Wall Street Journal, which reported the Netflix news first earlier in the day, the price cuts span across some Middle Eastern countries, sub-Saharan African markets and parts of Latin America and Asia. The cuts apply to certain tiers of Netflix in those markets and in some cases halving the cost of a subscription, the Journal reported. Netflix, which operates in over 190 countries, has been looking to grow share in newer international regions as the US and Canada markets saturate. Earlier this month, it laid out plans to crack down on password sharing for accounts on its streaming p

"Congress Was Special Purpose Vehicle For Independence Movement": Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today said the Congress party was a "Special Purpose Vehicle" for independence movement, without any ideology, whereas the BJP was formed on the basis of an ideological pillar called "cultural nationalism". India's story has begun and by 2047 creation of a "great India" is certain, he said, as he credited the people for a "paradigm shift" in the country, by bringing in the Narendra Modi led BJP government. Mr Shah was speaking at an interactive session on "Indian Polity - 65 years Scenario & Paradigm Shift Under Modi Ji" organised by 'Samvada' here. Noting that Congress which contributed in a big way for the freedom struggle is today completely "fallen" into the dynastic system, and its internal democracy has fully eroded, the Union Minister said, Socialist parties too after Lohia era gradually turned into caste based party initially, and then went on to become dynastic parties.

In Shiv Sena Row, Now Focus On Claim To Party Headquarters, Mouthpiece

With the Election Commission (EC) recognising Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's faction as the real Shiv Sena, now whether his group also stakes claim to the party headquarters 'Shiv Sena Bhavan' and party mouthpiece 'Saamana', both currently controlled by the Uddhav Thackeray camp. While the Shiv Sena Bhavan is located at Dadar in central Mumbai, the 'Saamana' head office is situated in the nearby Prabhadevi area. Both these establishments are currently run by different trusts. CM Shinde has maintained that he would not stake claim to the Shiv Sena Bhavan even though he has got the party name and symbol. However, the rival camp is wary and on guard. Recently, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader and Thane MP Rajan Vichare submitted a letter to Thane Police Commissioner Jai Jeet Singh, urging him to thwart any attempts by the Shinde group to usurp the Shiv Sena 'shakhas' (local party offices) in the city. The EC last week recogni

"With Elon Musk declaring child sexual abuse a top priority, this is an opportunity for him to explain what he is indeed doing," e-safety commissioner Julie Inman Grant told Reuters in an interview, referring to several of Musk's tweets. She said it was in Twitter's interests to show that it was acting effectively to eradicate child sexual abuse material, otherwise advertisers could turn away from the company.
